Local man dies in accident

— A Camden man was involved in a fatal one-vehicle accident near the Hugg & Hall business in East Camden on Monday.

Around 9 p.m. Monday, Matthew S. Jacobs, 34, of 153 Joan Street in Camden was traveling south on U.S. 79 North when his vehicle crossed over through the north-bound lane, left the roadway and hit a tree, according to a report from the Arkansas State Police.

A witness who was traveling north reported having to swerve to keep from hitting Jacobs when Jacobs' car crossed into northbound lane.

“By all appearances, it looks like he may have fallen asleep,” Ouachita County Sheriff David Norwood told the Camden News. “The witness said that (Jacobs’) break lights never came on when he crossed into the opposing lane.”

Members from the Ouachita County Sheriff’s Department and the Arkansas State Police responded to the accident. According to the preliminary fatal crash summary from the ASP, Jacobs was driving a 2005 Chrysler in clear weather conditions on a dry road when the wreck occurred.

Jacobs was pronounced dead by Ouachita County Coroner Sylvester Smith at 9:35 p.m. No one else was injured in the accident.

The ASP is serving as the investigating agency for the accident.
