Rain puts damper on holiday program

— The Star Spangled Spectacular is postponed until a later date due to rainy weather this weekend, according to Camden Ministerial Alliance’s Charlotte Young.

The 15th Annual Star Spangled Spectacular - which is sponsored by the Camden Ministerial Alliance and, in part, by the Camden Advertising and Promotion Commission - was set to be held at the Camden Regional Airport on Saturday, but Young stated that the event was canceled because the airfield and parking area were “standing in water” after heavy rain entered the area.

She explained that her organization will have to seek another permit from the state's fire marshal to hold the event on another day.

Organizers of the event still held out hope that the event could go on as scheduled despite the 50-percent chance of rain that had been predicted by weather forecasters.

However, after rain entered Ouachita County, the event had to be shelved.

The Star Spangled Spectacular was going to feature skydivers, and the rain prevented the use of airplanes.

Also, a “Freedom 5K Run/Walk” has been postponed. Young reported that more than 50 people signed up to participate in the 5K event this year.

Inflatables, concessions, a rock climbing wall and baseball toss will set to be held at the event, and the awarding-winning gospel trio “The Master’s Voice” were set to perform.

However, the group's visit to Camden was not in vain as they were able to perform at Victory Church on Sunday.

The Camden News will post the reschedule date of the Star Spangled Spectacular - and will publish the activities that will still be featured at the event - as soon as a new date and schedule have been determined.
