Sue's Table shows volunteer' spirit

— The recent undertaking of a public service project at one of Camden’s churches recognizes a real need in the community and sets about to try to help meet that need.

A program known as Sue’s Table at First United Methodist Church is serving free suppers to anyone in need of a hot meal.

Annually, a free Thanksgiving dinner is served at the church. Recognizing the need by many for a regular source of nutrition, the church is now a site for the weekly free meals from 5:30-6:30 p.m. each Monday.

While the group of volunteers, now reported to be 180 strong, cannot every day feed every person lacking sufficient food in the Camden area, Sue’s Table is a commendable effort. Providing such a service is a significant and worthwhile contribution to the community. The program, along with the church’s and other area food pantries, addresses the real problem of local hunger and are shining examples of what the elder George Bush referred to as a “Thousand Points of Light.” Former President George H.W. Bush cited such volunteerism as examples of people helping people - stepping forward to serve our less fortunate citizens.

Other Camden churches have become involved in Sue’s Table. The First United Methodist Church newsletter reports that Timothy United Methodist Church, St. Mark United Methodist Church, Fairview United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church and First Baptist Church have formed teams and joined the project

We salute those who saw this community need and are doing their part to meet it.
