Two students win trip to Washington

— The Camden News has learned that two area students will be sponsored by Ouachita Electric Cooperative Corporation to attend an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., as apart of the Annual Electric Cooperative Youth Tour.

Jayln Bounds, daughter of Misti and Ricky Bounds; and Wyatt Williams, son of Larry and Scarlett Williams; were this year’s chosen candidates based off of an essay they submitted to OECC.

The topic of this year’s essay was: “Why I Would be a Good Youth Tour Representative." The essay contest is available to all junior’s in high school whose addresses are served by OECC, according to Angie McLendon of the local co-op.

The tour to Washington involves every electric co-op throughout the nation, and sponsors a total of 1,600 students: Two per co-op. There will be 38 other students from Arkansas sponsored along with Bounds and Williams. The trip is seven days - from June 9-15 - and will involve detailed tours throughout the D.C. area.

The students will have an opportunity to visit the White House, the Smithsonian, the U.S. Capitol, etc.

“They get to see everything D.C. has to offer, it’s an incredible opportunity and experience for the students,” said McLendon.

An alternate was also chosen in the event that one of the two sponsored students can’t attend, and her name is Neely Purifoy, daughter of Ricky and Terra Purifoy.

McLendon explained that all surrounding area school counselors are notified when the contest is available for entry, as well as sending post cards to all of the homes served by OECC.
