Harmony Grove sweeps MMI tourney

The Harmony Grove Lady Hornets made history on Saturday by capturing its second Murphy Market Invitational title. The tournament was started last year and thus far, H.G. has the only winners of the girls bracket in its history. The H.G. boys also won its first MMI title last Saturday which included a boys bracket for the first time this year.

The Lady Hornets met a familiar foe in the finals when it matched up against Hermitage. The Lady Hornets won, 48-38, behind a season-high 31 points from Sidney Pigott. Halley Bryant added 10 points while Olivia Knight finished with four and Synthia English scored 3 points.

“Great game by both teams,” H.G. Head girls coach Chuck Lowery said. “Hermitage has a good team.”

The Harmony Grove Hornets had to beat the defending 3A State Champions Megehee 74-65 to capture the first place finish.

Xaylon Falls had a season high 25 points followed by Landon Mcmahan with 17, Shaun Lucas with 9, Jayce Posey and Antwoin Edwards with 7 each, and Mason McClure with 5.

“Played the best we have all year,” H.G. Head Boys Basketball Coach Jon Pigott said. “I don’t know where it has been. Hopefully we can carry this over to conference play next week.”

The H.G. will host Lafayette County on Tuesday with games starting at 5 p.m.
