Nellie Mae Abraham Pickings was born on Nov. 22, 1928, in Texarkana, Arkansas, and passed away on June 15, 2018.

She attended Kiblah school in Texarkana, Arkansas. She was married to Benjamin Franklin Pickings in August 1945. Nellie was very active in the community and the church. Although never having any children of her own, she was an avid lover of children. She transported children to school and babysat more than 50 babies and children. She loved to cook and prided herself on her food along with entertaining guests. She announced yearly that anyone who did not have food for Thanksgiving, her home was available to them.

She was a deaconess, a member of the Pilgriminaires, kitchen committee, and the president of the Mary F. Jones Circle. She was a faithful member at Pilgrim Rest until her health failed.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Deacon Benjamin Franklin Pickings; her parents; her brother; and two sisters, Lee Ester White and Carol Mothershed.

She is survived by one sister-in-law, Mary Rose Hale of Houston, Texas; one brother-in-law, Cornelius Roosevelt Pickens of Texarkana, Arkansas; a host of nieces, nephews, and church family; and her special caregivers, Carolyn Oakley, Barbara Johnson, and Neoma Jackson and family.

Proctor Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Funeral services for Nellie will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
