Dorothy Sanders

Dorothy (Milner) Sanders, 91, of Stephens died Tuesday, March 2, 2010, in the Ouachita Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Camden. She was born on July 6, 1918, in the Milner Community in Columbia County to the late J.C. and Laura (Kelly) Milner.

Dorothy and her husband, Garland, were the owners of Sanders Grocery and Market in Stephens for 40 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Stephens, the Stephens Southern Ladies at Stephens Security Bank and was the Stephens Senior Citizen of the Year in 2005.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Garland Sanders; a great-grandson, Nathan Rose; brother, Jack Milner; and sister, Mattie Lou Wilson.

Survivors are her sons, Dr. Cal R. Sanders and wife, Debbie, of Camden, Sandy Sanders and wife, Missie, of Monticello; daughters, Shelby Marcus and husband, Lawrence, of Dallas, Texas, Jacky Gunter and husband, Mike, of McNeil; grandchildren, Jimmy Stroope of Houston, Texas, Rusty Sanders of Camden, Tim Sanders and wife, Bridget, of Camden, Jerry Thompson and wife, Gloria, of Many, La., Ronnie Gunter and wife, Christie, of El Dorado, Donnie Gunter and wife, Jennifer, of Magnolia, Mikey Gunter of McNeil, Beth Bevis and husband, Mark, of Florence, Ala., Tina Stroope of Detroit, Mich., Lisa Browning of Dallas, Brooke Rose and husband, Brian, of Kansas City, Kan.; 17 great- grandchildren; brother, Charles Milner and wife, Becky, of Magnolia; sisters-in-law, Nellie Milner of Stamps, Shelda Sanders of Houston, Texas; and brother-in-law, Lewis Wilson of the Lydesdale community.

Lewis Funeral Home of Magnolia is in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Stephens with Bro. Bruce Murphy officiating and assisted by Bro. Danny Bullock. Burial will follow at Stephens Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jimmy Stroope, Rusty Sanders, Tim Sanders, Jerry Thompson, Ronnie Gunter and Donnie Gunter. Honorary pallbearer will be Mikey Gunter.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

The Sanders family will receive friends on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning at 323 East Ruby Street in Stephens.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Stephens, or to the First Baptist Church in McNeil.
