E. RAY DOWNEYE. Ray “Sundown” Downey, 63, of Junction City, died Thursday, March 11, 2010, at his residence.
Born Aug. 5, 1946, in West Monroe, La., to Robert F. and Hazel Freeman Downey, he was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. A U. S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, Ray graduated the White’s Ferry Road School of Preaching and Northeast Louisiana University. He served as an elder at Hillsboro Street Church of Christ and loved his family, church family and football very much. Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Floyd Ralph Downey. Survivors include his wife, Nigel Hall Downey of Junction City; son, Cyrus Ray Downey and wife Timilyn of Tulsa, Okla.; daughter, Amber Downey and fiance Jamie Nix of Cleburne, Texas; brother, William Downey and wife Patsy of West Monroe, La.; sisters, Eunice Boyd and husband James of West Monroe, Juanita Bradley and husband Jerry of Winnsboro, La., and Ruth Mathews (his twin sister) and husband Gary of Independence, La. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hillsboro Street Church of Christ with Ken Stegall officiating. Interment will follow at Olive Branch Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
