The $5 million Apple Blossom Invitational – a dream matchup between thoroughbred champions Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta April 9 at Oaklawn Park – fell through with the announcement Sunday that Rachel Alexandra, 2009 Horse of the Year, would miss the race after losing her 4-year-old debut Saturday. Zardana’s upset victory in the inaugural New Orleans Ladies at Fair Grounds snapped the nine-race winning streak of Rachel Alexandra, whose 8-for-8 record last year included the Preakness Stakes and two other races against male rivals.
