Feelings mixed over injured-inmate deal

HOT SPRINGS — While Garland County could soon settle the case of two county detention center officials found “deliberately indifferent” to an inmate’s medical needs in 2007 for $450,000, the attorney representing the plaintiff says he is “ambivalent” about the proposed settlement.

A U.S. District Court jury deliberated for nearly two days in December before deciding there was a “preponderance of evidence” that nurse Tommy Harmon and Garland County sheriff’s office Sgt. Donald Ansley were indifferent to Steven McFarland’s medical needs while he was incarcerated Feb. 13, 2007.
