— White Oak Lake State Park Programs & Activities

White Oak Lake State Park is prepping for weekend activities to help residents take advantage of the long Labor Day weekend, according to a news release.

Below are the scheduled events:

• Friday

“State Park Explorer”

Meeting Place: Visitor Center

This event will be held all weekend. Arkansas State Park Explorers are kids ages 6-14 who care about nature, history, safety, and fun. Participants earn an official explorer badge and certificate. Go by the visitor’s center to receive a State Park Explorer Field Guide.

6 - 6:30 p.m.

“Spider Olympics”

Meeting Place: Spring Branch Trailhead

If you ever feel like your life is tough, you should put yourself in the life of a spider. Join a park interpreter and discover the awesome life of spiders that live at the park.

7:30 - 8 p.m.

“Spider Sniffing”

Meeting Place: Spring Branch Trailhead

Do you know how to sniff out spiders? Discover how to sniff out the different spiders of White Oak Lake State Park. Participants are asked to bring flashlight and wear good walking shoes.

• Saturday

9 - 10 a.m.

“Legacy Hike”

Meeting Place: Beech Ridge Trailhead

Join a park interpreter for a relaxing hike and learn about the wonders White Oak Lake State Park. The trail is two miles long. Wear good hiking shoes.

1 - 1:30 p.m.

“History of Poison Springs”

Meeting Place: Visitor Center

The Battle of Poison Springs took place on April 18, 1864, and was part of the Red River Campaign in Arkansas. Join a park interpreter and learn about this famous battle.

6 - 7:30 p.m.

“Legacy Cruise”

Meeting Place: Marina

Climb aboard and experience the rich wildlife, history, and beauty of White Oak Lake. The cost is $5 per child and $9 per adult. Pre-registration is required. Reservations can be made in the visitor center starting at noon the day before. Bring your own water to drink, and be ready to board 15 minutes prior to the start of the tour so the boat can depart on time.

• Sunday

9 - 9:30 a.m.

Morning Service

Meeting Place: Amphitheater

Sunday morning service will be held. Everyone is welcome to attend this non-denominational devotion which is led by a local minister. No need to dress up - camping attire is welcomed.

11 - 11:30 a.m.

“Where are my Parents?”

Meeting Place: Visitor Center

Many animals change drastically from birth to becoming an adult. Join a park interpreter and learn how some of these animals change.

1 - 1:30 p.m.

“Edible Insects”

Meeting Place: Amphitheater

In other parts of the world, eating insects is considered a delicacy. The park interpreter will test ideas of who really eats bugs and who doesn’t. Are you brave enough to join the “I Ate A Bug” club? Come take a bite, or at least watch.

3 - 3:45 p.m.

:Mammals of W.O.L.S.P:

Meeting Place: Spring Branch Trailhead

Join a park interpreter and discover some of the furry creatures that call White Oak Lake State Park home, and learn about several different animals from deer to raccoons and many more.
