Heavy rain leads to dangerous roads

— With the forecast indicating that we’re still in store for more threatening weather, we remind Ouachita County residents of the need to be vigilant in taking precautions during storms and flooding conditions.

Jerry Hendrix of the Ouachita County Highway Department recently said that he had not experienced the county receiving this much rain over a weekend. He listed many county roads affected by the inundation, which pose serious hazards to motorists. Please heed the warning to “turn around, don’t drown” when encountering water across a roadway. Even what appears to be a small amount of water can be enough to sweep away a vehicle.

Also, we continue to be amazed that motorists will drive around barriers to put themselves in danger. A few years ago, such action cost the life of a Ouachita County acquaintance.

The tragic news out of East Texas about the deaths of two children in a vehicle struck by a falling tree reminds us of the instances of trees falling on vehicles in this area, causing damages and threatening lives. It is important that we are observant while driving in stormy weather and pay special attention during high winds and during heavy rainfalls that could lead to toppling trees. Be watchful for and avoid power lines that have been downed by fallen trees.

Obviously, it is important to check for overhanging limbs that are threats to homes, and to be careful of them when it is necessary to be outside during storms. Do not go outside during periods of lightning.

Yes, as the song says, the sun will come out tomorrow, so let’s stay safe and alive during this stormy season.
