CAMDEN By BRADLY GILL
Two Camden events placed at the Arkansas Festival And Events Association Awards last month.
The winners of the ALFIE Awards for 2018, given by the Arkansas Festivals & Events Association, were announced at the Association’s 35th Annual Conference & Trade Show held in Hot Springs on Jan. 30 -31.
Camden’s First Friday Market was awarded a bronze certificate in the Best New Festival or Event category. Eligible events are those still within their first five years and judging is based on the operation’s growth, uniqueness and community contribution.
Rajveer Kang, who conceptualized the market based on similar activities in communities where she has lived previously, said in an earlier interview with the Camden News that First Friday is a collective effort with each committee member playing an essential role.
“This has been a huge group effort with each member working immensely hard,” Kang said.
Kang, Selynda Tucker, Laura Raines, Charlotte Young, Ashley Kriehn and Sherri Steelman make up the group, and each has assumed roles that coincide with their talents.
The diverse group came together because of each member’s individual ties to Kang. Kriehn’s daughter is friends with Kang’s. Raines chatted with Kang on The Trace walking path. Young met her on a play-day at the playground at Victory Church. Tucker connected with Kang via Facebook Messenger.
Additionally the Rumble on the River presented by Arkansas Bass Team Trail, which took place in September of 2018 won a bronze award with the Sporting Event of the Year, which is given to a festival or event that brings recognition to the sport and enhances community pride.
The Rumble on the River took place on the Ouachita River and was attended by fisherman throughout Arkansas.
More than $10,000 in prizes were awarded.
According to a release from association:
“The ALFIE Awards, Arkansans Love Festivals & Events,” honor the best and brightest of Arkansas festivals and special events.”
