It definitely wasn’t because of a lack of effort, but the Bearden and Harmony Grove 2019 basketball season came to a close on Wednesday at Fordyce in the 8-2A District Tournament.

The Lady Hornets fell 42-35 to Woodlawn on Wednesday after coming off a two-round bye. H.G. has played through adversity the entire season after losing one of its leading scorers in Sidney Pigott to a leg injury early in conference play. H.G. was still able to finish the year with a 14-11 overall record.

The Bearden Bears (12-13, 8-8) loss 50-40 to a tough Junction City Dragons team. The Bears led by three after the first quarter and only trailed by three at the half, but were only able to score three points in the third as the Dragons built a double digit lead. The Bears would scrap in the fourth quarter and score 23 points but it wouldn’t be enough.

The Bears advanced to play the Dragons after beating Fordyce - a team that has beaten Bearden twice this year - on Tuesday night 48-44.

The Lady Bears (4-21, 2-14) also picked up a victory during the district tournament but fell to Woodlawn in the second round, 38-35.

The Harmony Grove Hornets (6-19, 2-15) defeated Spring Hill on the opening night of the tournament but loss to Woodlawn, 63-49 on Tuesday to end its season.

The top four girls and boys teams qualify for the regional tournament that will be held in Junction City next week.
