Bearden and Harmony Grove put on yet another brilliant display of fierce competition on Tuesday night. The Lady Hornets defeated the Lady Bears, 44-22, and the Bears beat the Hornets, 66-61.

The Lady Hornets only led 7-2 at the end of the first quarter before outscoring Bearden 16-5 in the second to take a 23-7 lead into the half. The hole proved to be to deep for the Lady Bears to climb out of as H.G. never looked back.

The Lady Hornets were led by Halley Bryant with 21 points. Olivia Knight added six while Hayley Eads scored 8. Logan Ramey and Abbey Stafford combined for seven points.

The win gives the Lady Hornets a 12-5 record, 6-3 in conference play.

In the boys game, the action weighed back and forth as each team put together impressive runs until the fourth quarter.

Bearden Head Coach Anthony Hammonds said he reminded his team that every time it plays H.G. they have to be ready for a battle.

With that in mind, the Bears jumped out to an early lead. However, the resilient Hornets put together a big run and led 32-25 at the half.

“(Xaylon) Falls had 22 of their 32 points at the half,” Hammonds said. “That never happens when one guy scores on us like that. I was hot at half time.”

The Bears tied the game by the end of the third and never looked back after taking the lead in the fourth.

The Bears had two student athletes finish with double-doubles. Lavarious Hughes had 20 points and 12 rebounds while Garrett McWhorter had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kendrick Juniel added 12 points.

With the wins against Harmony Grove and on the road against Junction City, Bearden has jumped from sixth in conference standings to being tied for third.

The Bears will have Friday off, before playing three varsity games next week.
