CAMDEN Mable Smedley
Mable Smedley was born on March 8, 1921, to the union of Ashberry McGhee and Plummer Tatum McGhee in Reader, Arkansas. She departed this life on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019, at home.
Mabel accepted Christ at an early age and joined Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where she was very active. She received her formal education at the Pleasant Hill School in Chidester, Arkansas. She worked for the school district for many years, had a reputation of always providing the children with candy, and had a way of always bringing a smile to the children’s faces.
She was joined in marriage to Ellis Smedley, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her father, Ashberry McGhee; mother, Plummer Tatum McGhee; seven brothers, Charlie McGhee, Donnie McGhee, Norman McGhee, Earley McGhee, Ashberry McGhee Jr., Nathaniel McGhee and Herman McGhee; and four sisters, Vadie Abner, Lottie Gulley, Lacy McCoy and Earlene Smith.
She leaves to cherish in memory one daughter, Bettye Patton of Chattanooga, Tennessee; two sons, John “Joe” Allen of Chidester, Arkansas and James Allen of Peoria, Illinois; one sister, Berline Purifoy of Peoria, Illinois; one brother, Hessley McGhee of Atlanta, Georgia; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Williams Funeral Home of 504 North Adams Ave. is in charge of the arrangements.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Chidester.
Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
