CAMDEN By PATRIC FLANNIGAN
It’s a good sign when a ball club can send not one, but two of its teams to a championship game in a tournament. That’s what happened for Arkansas Pulpwood.
The Arkansas Pulpwood 18U team won the upper division of the Bastrop/Crossett Invitational Tournament over the weekend going 3-0 to improve its record to 10-1 on the year.
The Pulpwood 18s defeated the Pulpwood 19U squad in a historic Championship game, 7-5. This was the first time ever outside of an intra-squad preseason scrimmage.
Gunner Branch pitched 6 innings for the 18U team giving up only six hits while walking six and striking out two. Walker Brown and Connor Herrington had two hits each for the winning team and Landon McMahen added three. Niles Smith, Gannon Bearden and Brett Bearden all had one hit.
The 19U squad committed seven errors during the game and walked three batters to fall to 4-3 on the summer after two losses over the weekend.
Both squads will be in action next weekend in the Texarkana Bulldogs tournament.
APW 15s split with El Dorado
The Arkansas Pulpwood 15U team split a couple of games over the weekend with the El Dorado Drillers losing in the Championship Game of the Bastrop/Crossett younger division, 8-4. The Pulpwood 15s blew a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning giving up five runs. Colton DeWoody pitched well holding the Drillers to three hits, four walks and striking out two. Logan Roberson took the Pulpwood 15’s first loss of the summer. Roberson gave up three hits and one walk in three innings of work, but also threw three strikeouts. Two of his five runs were unearned.
The Pulpwood batters struggled, only managing two hits in the game while striking out 11 times.
In earlier action, Brad Launius pitched a complete game picking up a 12-2 victory over the El Dorado Drillers.
Launius gave up five hits, walked three and struck out three. Launius also added three hits himself in the contest with an RBI while Roberson and Cooper West added three hits each. Cooper O’Bryant added two hits.
The Pulpwood 15’s are 8-1 on the summer and will play in Little Rock this weekend.
