The Ouachita County Medical Center hosted an event this week to honor Dr. Milton Brunson as he retires from his practice.

Brunson had an obstetrics/gynecology practice in Camden for around 34 years and recently announced his retirement.

Also, he was given the award of 2018 Man of the Year by the Outstanding Women of Distinction in Southern Arkansas, Inc. during the group’s 13th Annual Gala Recognition Banquet and Ball in October of 2018.

It was stated during the banquet that Brunson has delivered more than 1,000 babies in the area, which has touched the lives of three generations of families.

Also during that event, information about Brunson was provided by OWOD, and it states that:

• Brunson was born in Searcy, graduated from White County Training School; and attended Philander Smith College, and Kellogg Community College.

• He then joined the U.S. Air Force with a four-year tour of duty as an aircraft control warning Operation 1 Artillery Coordinator in Vietnam.

• Brunson continued to pursue his education at Southeastern Massachusetts University Dartmouth, Arkansas State University in Beebe, and at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

• At UALR, he was the first African American to be admitted into the Surgical 1 Obstetrics residency program, and became the first African American to graduate from the program.

• Brunson then moved to Camden and set up a solo OB/GYN practice before joining the Ouachita Valley Family Clinic where he practiced for several years before returning to his solo practice.

• In Camden, his community activities included being the obstetrics and surgical chairperson at the Ouachita County Medical Center, a member of the Ouachita County Medical Center and as a member of the Camden Rotary Club.
