Religious Reflections: Why families are struggling during these ‘last days’

— By Richard Merritt

The last days are perilous times (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

These difficult, dangerous and deadly days work to weaken the resolve of any family.

The lack of commitment to pray together, worship together in the truth and study the Bible together robs families of the needed strength to endure with love and forgiveness.

The Bible reveals the reasons families struggle. They include selfishness (me first), covetousness (love of money), boasting (bragging on self), pride, a lack of reverence toward God, speaking hateful things about God, disobedient to parents, no sense of thanksgiving and corrupt words, thoughts and actions.

Adding to the problem is the idea that children are an inconvenience.

The list includes lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.

Jesus is the only cure for the family. When family members copy the words, actions, thinking and behavior of worldly minded and ungodly people, the family unit is headed for disaster.

The Bible warns families not to live such a life. When your family struggles, draw near to God (Proverbs 3:5-7).

Every family relationship must be founded on faith in God – husband and wife, parents and children, brothers and sisters.

The Bible ideal for the family is a father married to the mother of his children. It has been reported that 70% of families include children of one parent homes or blended families trying to recover from the heartbreak of divorce.

Satan’s attacks on the family continue the chaos in homes which were intended to be a place of peace, safety and a little bit of Heaven on earth.

The ideal family situation includes a family altar, Bible reading, praying and faithful church attendance where Bible truth is preached and taught.

These things give the extra benefits of accumulated spiritual strength and blessings that come from striving to live for God.

Try it, you’ll like it.
