First Friday is holding a scarecrow competition

First Friday will hold its 2nd Annual Scarecrow Design Competition. Scarecrows will be displayed on light posts on Washington St and Adams St. from Saturday, Oct. 12 through Saturday, Nov. 9. The contest is free to enter and there will be first, second, and third-place ribbons. Spots are limited, so get your entry in fast.

All entries must be received by Thursday, Oct. 3.

A press release from the organization list the contest rules:

• Participation: The Scarecrow contest is open to all individuals, groups, churches organizations and businesses. We encourage adults and children of all ages to participate Children under the age of 18 must have an adult sponsor

• Scarecrow Basics: Scarecrows and decor must be as weather resistant as possible withstanding wind, rain, humidity, and heat for multiple weeks. We encourage the use of non organic materials (fake greenery, pumpkins, etc), We suggest the scarecrow’s overall height be no less than 5 feet and no more than 7 feet.

• Scarecrow Set-up: Each entry must be in place by 8 pm on Saturday, October 12. You will receive a light post location from the First Friday team after acceptance and should attach your scarecrow to the light post using zip ties, Please only use zip ties to attach the scarecrow to the light post. Any other method used to secure the scarecrow to the post could be automatically disqualified. We recommend that construction of the scarecrow is completed before you bring it downtown to attach to your light post. No painting downtown

• Scarecrow Removal: The scarecrows will remain on display until no later than Saturday November 9. Please monitor your scarecrow through the time of display and keep it looking fresh, remove any decaying organic matter, etc, and repair anything as needed

• Voting: All voting will be done by the public on Facebook and at the November 1st First Friday Market. Voting will open online Saturday, Oct. 25, and end Friday, Nov. 1. Winner will be announced after the Friday, November 1st, First Friday Market

“ Themes: Show us your creativity, but please keep scarecrows family friendly. No inappropriate or over-frightening designs. (Creepy and spooky are OK, gory and bloody are not) No political, religious or offensive statements/designs.”
