PIGGOTT—The Harmony Grove Hornets came from down 18 points at halftime to defeat the Piggott Mohawks 28-24 at Piggott last Friday night in the first round of the Class 3 A football play-offs.
The Mohawks were on the warpath early in the contest racing out to an 18-0 lead with under 2 minutes to go in the first half. Their multi-talented QB Tanner Dixon scored the first two touchdowns for the home team. One was on a 6 yard pass with 6:25 to go in the first quarter. The second was on a 1 yard run at 9:39 in the second. His talented RB Trevor Stevens scored on a 10 yard run with3:57 to go in the first half. Each of their 2 point conversion attempts failed giving them the 18 point advantage.
Coach Ernie Horstcamp’s Hornets scored its only first half points at 1:31 in the second period. Freshman QB Caleb Johnson connected on a 50 yard pass play with Andrew Taylor that cut the lead to 18-6. They failed to convert the 2-point attempt.
Piggott responded with another touchdown with 4 seconds to go in the half when Dixon scored from 1 yard out giving the home squad a 24-6 advantage at the break.
The second half was dominated by the Hornet’s defense and an offense that scored 22 unanswered points for the victory. The first came at 9:59 in the third quarter when Johnson connected with Jeremie Edwards on a 38 yard pass. The 2 point attempt was good cutting the lead to 24-14. Edwards scored again on a 1 yard run with 5:28 to go in the same quarter. Once again the 2 point play was successful cutting the Mohawks lead to 24-20.
Senior RB Mecca Arnold scored the winning touchdown on a 2 yard run with 1:27 to go in the game. The Hornets converted on the 2 point attempt setting the final score of 28-24.
Harmony Grove will face the Centerpoint Knights next Friday night at Centerpoint. The Knights defeated the Rison Wildcats 38-22 at Rison on Friday night to advance to the second round. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00.
The Hornets carry a 6-4 record into next week’s contest. Piggott finished the year at 7-4 overall.
