El Dorado's mid-century modern architecture highlighted in upcoming virtual home tours

Special to the Camden News

Preserve Arkansas, a statewide nonprofit advocate for historic preservation, will offer free virtual tours of four mid-century modern properties at El Dorado this month.

Organizers are seeking to to increase appreciation for Arkansas's unique mid-century modern architecture through the tours.

Tour videos will premiere on Preserve Arkansas's Facebook page and YouTube channel on Sept. 21 and Sept. 23 at 6 p.m.

The first video, appearing on Sept. 21, will include the Henley and Riley houses designed in 1960 by celebrated Arkansan architect E. Fay Jones, who spent most of his childhood living in El Dorado.

The second video, appearing on Sept. 23, will highlight the Gilliam-Wilson and Clark houses designed in 1957 and 1960, respectively, by Charles Ripley. Ripley was a contemporary of Fay Jones, graduating in 1951 from the University of Arkansas's new architecture program.

Learn about the architecture of these homes as well as the people who designed and lived in them. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, including Murphy USA and the University of Arkansas's Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design, the virtual tours are free to watch.

Mid Mod Arkansas is an educational program benefiting Preserve Arkansas. Preserve Arkansas works to build stronger communities by reconnecting Arkansans to their heritage and empowering people to save and rehabilitate historic places.
