City Attorney squashes bid process rumor

City Attorney Michael Frey said that a local resident who said on a Facebook livestream that Treasurer Lauren Robertson opened envelopes containing bids for city services was incorrect. .

On Feb. 10, the City of Camden opened bids for towing services in the council chambers . Robertson was not listed among the participants.

Frey said, "I would say, in general, they don't go to her anyways. They go to the mayor's office. But ... the towing one was a little bit unique, just because there was an actual ... meeting."

At the meeting, Mayor Charlotte Young stated that Alderperson Ebony Gulley had inspected the envelopes to verify that they were all sealed and did not appear to have been tampered with.

Buddy's Wrecker Service was the lowest bid for towing large vehicles at $250 inside the city and $275 outside the city, with $4.59 per mile for city vehicles. OTM was the lowest bid for towing regular size vehicles at $32.30 inside the city and $2.00 per mile outside the city.

Resolutions awarding the bids were approved at February's City Council meeting.

Frey stated that Robertson's office only sees bids after they had been voted on by the City Council.

He stated, "The only time the bids would go there would be after they've been completed and awarded, you know, and we're getting ready to pay somebody."

"She keeps a copy, but she doesn't have them before they're open and she doesn't have anything to do with the opening process. That's gonna be all the mayor's office and assistant to the mayor," he added.
