The end of January will debut a new event for Camden. "Treasures of Queen City" symposium is a modern historical event coming to the city beginning Jan. 25 from 6-8 p.m. at the Leake-Ingham Building, according to Dr. Adrianne M. Toney, symposium coordinator.

"We are kicking off the new year with a Cultural Exhibition and Portrait Symposium on Great Women with roots in Arkansas: Paying homage to our ancestors, honoring our predecessors, celebrating our contemporaries and propelling our successors," stated Toney's release.

Opening night is Janis F. Kearney, who is the president and founder of the Celebrate Maya Project. Curry worked with and wrote about Dr. Angelou, which led her to create the national organization based in Little Rock.

The event runs January 25 - February 29, throughout Black History Month each Thursday night. This is a local celebration of cultural and artistic excellence from women with deep southern roots that have made a global impact around the world, said Toney..

The special guests are as follows:

February 1 Sis. Faith Thompson on the Art in The Gospel.

February 8 Ms. Carolyn Williams on Artifacts and Symbolism

February 15 Ms. Hannah Moore on Architectural Jewels in Queen City

February 22 Mrs. Arnetta Brunson on the Healing Arts with Food and Medicine

February 29 Ms. Krystle Browning on the Art of Investing and Succession

The Arkansas Arts Council will host opening night with refreshments and information about the council.

Each speaker after will expound on different Queen City women and be its own separate honoree.

"These individuals were selected with purpose for their connection to the honoree of the evening," Toney pointed out and stressed she made the choices on her own. " We are looking forward to the knowledge they bring that has never been discovered."

"We want to unearth the treasures in Queen City, including the individuals and connections," said Toney. "We want people to come visit us for our history - that includes the Freedman Bureau and the Chidester-McColum House - and learn things that maybe they didn't know."

Toney strongly encourages RSVP for the limited-seating event. However, requests interested parties to spread the word to family and friends, including children of all ages, so everyone can attend what could be a monumental moment for Camden.
