Camden Fire Department stresses weather awareness

The Camden Fire Department advises residents to be weather aware.

A post on the department's Facebook page states, "

Remember this week: People, pipes, and pets!

Lost in all the news of potential snow -- but just as important -- are life-threatening cold temperatures that will affect the area the remainder of this week.

Temperatures dropped below freezing around midnight last night, and are expected to remain below freezing through at least Wednesday morning. Overnight lows will be in the lower teens or single digits, and wind chill values will also be in the single digits.

So remember:

Be sure to regularly check on PEOPLE who may not have adequate heating, especially the elderly.

Wrap or drain unprotected PIPES and plumbing, slightly open both hot and cold taps on faucets to prevent freezing, and open cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around sinks.

Make sure all PETS have warm locations to sleep.

If you must venture outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and wear a hat and gloves. Hypothermia, frostbite, and potential death will result if precautions are not taken.

"When using any heater, maintain a safe distance between the heater and any flammable objects. Do not use heaters that are not approved for indoor use, and do not use extension cords or powerstrips with electric heaters. Make sure your smoke detectors are operating properly. And if you have natural gas appliances providing heat in your home, please make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector."
