Man charged with domestic battery in connection with minor who sustained serious brain injury

*UPDATE* An earlier version of this story incorrectly indicated that the Pickering's girlfriend was the mother of the child. 

A Camden man has been charged with first degree domestic assault after he was accused of assaulting he allegedly assaulted an 8 year old family member, leaving the girl on life support.

Robert Pickering is currently being held at the housed in Ouachita County Detention Center on a $1,000,000 bond.

According to a Camden Police Department report, on March 19, at 9:09 a.m, CPD officers were dispatched to a home on Oxford street at 9:09 a.m. on March 19 for an individual who was unresponsive.

Upon arrival, officers were met by Pickering who said the child was 8 years old and appeared to be having a seizure.

The report states that officers noticed dried blood in the juvenile's ears, as well as suspicious bruising on the child's arms and waist.

The Pickering's girlfriend  later told police that Pickering, called her during her break at Tyson Foods' Hope facility location and stated, "I f---ed up" and that he stated to EMS that he was "whooping" the minor when she had a seizure.

According to the report, the girlfriend noted that Pickering had abused her in the past, but to her knowledge had not hit  the minor , though he had grabbed her forcefully by the arm and was verbally abusive.

The child was sent to Arkansas Children's Medical Center for an assumed internal brain injury and remains on life support, the report said.
